Which Tool Should I Use?

The Eduqas Biology Grade Calculator has two main tools, each designed for different situations:

ToolWhen to UseWhat It Does
📊 Results AnalyserResults day, or when planning resitsEnter your actual exam marks, see your grade, and calculate what you’d need if resitting
🔍 Mock Exam AnalyserAfter mock exams, during revisionEnter mock scores to predict your grade and identify areas to improve
ℹ️ About Eduqas A-Level Biology Eduqas is a linear qualification, meaning all 3 components are examined at the end of Year 13. Unlike WJEC (Wales), there’s no AS level that contributes to your final grade, and Eduqas uses raw marks rather than UMS.

Understanding Raw Marks & Percentages

Eduqas A-Level Biology uses raw marks only (no UMS conversion like WJEC). Here’s what you need to know:

Raw Marks
The actual marks you score on each exam paper. Each component is worth 100 marks, giving a total of 300 marks for the whole qualification.
Percentage
Your raw marks expressed as a percentage. Since each component is out of 100, your raw mark equals your percentage for that component.
Grade Boundaries
The minimum total raw marks needed for each grade. These are set after marking is complete and vary each year depending on exam difficulty.

The Three Components

ComponentNameMarksDuration
1Energy for Life1002 hours
2Continuity of Life1002 hours
3Requirements for Life1002 hours
Total3006 hours
💡 Tip: Finding Your Marks On results day, your results slip will show your raw marks for each component and your total. You can also view these through your school’s exam officer or the Eduqas candidate portal.

Using the Results Analyser

Use this tool on results day or when you have your actual exam marks. It shows your grade and helps you decide whether resitting is worthwhile.

1

Select Your Exam Year

Choose the year you sat your exams (2022–2025). This determines which grade boundaries are used.

2

Choose Your Target Grade

Select the grade you’re aiming for. The tool will show how far you are from achieving this.

3

Select Input Type

Choose whether to enter Raw Marks or Percentages. Since each component is out of 100, these are effectively the same.

4

Enter Your Component Marks

Input your marks for Component 1, 2, and 3. These should be from your official results.

5

Click “Analyse My Results”

The tool will calculate your total, show your grade, and display how close you are to each grade boundary.

Understanding Your Results

After analysis, you’ll see:

  • Total Raw Marks: Your combined score out of 300
  • Your Grade: The grade you achieved based on this year’s boundaries
  • Target Status: How many marks you need for your target grade (or confirmation you’ve achieved it)
  • Component Breakdown: Your performance in each paper with notional grades
  • Grade Boundaries: How your marks compare to each boundary

Using the Resit Impact Calculator

⚠️ Important: Eduqas Resit Rules Eduqas A-Level Biology is a linear qualification. If you choose to resit, you must resit ALL 3 components in the same exam series. You cannot resit individual papers. Your previous results will be completely replaced.

The Resit Calculator appears after you’ve analysed your results. It helps you determine whether resitting would be worthwhile.

1

First Complete the Results Analysis

Enter your current marks and click “Analyse My Results” to see your grade.

2

Enter Predicted Resit Marks

In the Resit Impact Calculator section, enter your predicted marks for ALL 3 components. Be realistic about what you could achieve with additional study.

3

Click “Calculate Resit Impact”

The tool shows whether resitting would improve your grade and help you reach your target.

When Is Resitting Worth It?

Consider resitting if:

  • You were close to a grade boundary and believe you can improve significantly
  • You had circumstances that affected your performance (illness, etc.)
  • You need a specific grade for university entry
  • You’re prepared to study all topics again, not just weak areas

Be cautious about resitting if:

  • You would need to take a gap year
  • Your marks are already strong and improvement is marginal
  • You struggled with all components equally

Using the Mock Exam Analyser

Use this tool after a mock exam to see your notional grade for that component. Analyse one mock at a time to track your progress.

1

Select the Component

Choose which component’s mock you’re analysing (Component 1, 2, or 3).

2

Select Grade Boundaries Year

Choose which year’s boundaries to compare against. 2025 is most recent.

3

Choose Your Input Type

Select Percentage or Raw Marks depending on how your mock result was given.

4

Enter Your Mock Score

Input your score for the selected component.

5

Click “Analyse My Mock”

The tool shows your notional grade for that component, how many marks to the next grade, and the full grade boundaries for comparison.

💡 Tip: Track Progress Over Time Analyse each mock as you complete them throughout the year. This helps you see improvement in specific components and identify which areas need more revision focus.

Tips & Common Questions

Boundaries are set after marking to ensure consistent standards. If a paper is harder than usual, boundaries are lowered so students aren’t disadvantaged. The 2022 boundaries were notably lower due to pandemic-related adjustments.

Use the year you sat (or will sit) your exams. For mock analysis, the most recent year (2025) gives the best indication, but checking multiple years shows how boundaries vary.

Eduqas publishes component-level boundaries for guidance, but only the overall total determines your final grade. A “notional A” on one component doesn’t guarantee an A overall.

For actual results, the tool is completely accurate — it uses official Eduqas boundaries. For mocks, accuracy depends on how representative your mock papers were of real exams.

Official boundaries are published on the Eduqas website after each exam series. You can also use the WJEC/Eduqas Mark Converter for interactive boundary lookup.
