Meet Your AQA Biology Tutor: Tyrone

Tyrone - AQA A-Level Biology tutor and former examiner with over 25 years teaching experience

Tyrone

A-Level Biology Tutor & Former WJEC/Eduqas & Edexcel Examiner

I have been teaching A-Level Biology for over 25 years, and I taught the AQA specification full-time at Gower College Swansea for over 5 years. This is not a specification I have simply read — I have lived it, taught it day in and day out, and guided hundreds of students through it. I understand exactly how AQA structures their questions, what their mark schemes reward, and the specific techniques that turn good answers into full-mark answers. As a Chartered Biologist and former examiner, I bring a depth of knowledge that only comes from decades of teaching and marking experience.

What Makes AQA A-Level Biology Challenging

The AQA 7402 specification is one of the most popular A-Level Biology courses in England, taken by approximately 55% of all A-Level Biology students. It is also one of the most demanding. The exams go well beyond testing factual recall — they require you to apply your knowledge to unfamiliar contexts, analyse data you have never seen before, and write extended answers that hit every mark scheme point.

Many students tell me they understand the biology but struggle to translate that understanding into marks. This is exactly what I help with. I teach you how AQA structures their questions, what the mark schemes actually reward, and the exam techniques that consistently turn good answers into full-mark answers.

Key point: AQA Biology is not just about knowing the content — it is about knowing how to answer AQA questions. That is where most marks are lost, and it is where I make the biggest difference.

Common Struggles I Help AQA Students Overcome

1

25-Mark Essay (Paper 3)

The synoptic essay is unique to AQA and catches many students off guard. I teach a structured approach: how to plan in 5 minutes, how to balance breadth and depth, and how to use scientific terminology that earns marks.

2

6-Mark Extended Response Questions

Knowing what structure to use, which key terms to include, and how to organise your answer logically is essential. I break down the mark scheme patterns so you can write confidently under exam pressure.

3

Data Analysis and Graph Interpretation

AQA frequently presents unfamiliar experiments and asks you to interpret the results. I teach you how to approach these questions systematically so you are never caught off guard.

4

Required Practicals

AQA has 12 required practicals that are assessed in the written exams. Understanding the principles behind each practical — not just memorising the method — is essential for full marks.

5

Mathematical Skills (10% of the Exam)

AQA requires Level 2 mathematical skills including statistical tests, logarithms, and calculations involving ratios and percentages. I help students who find the maths challenging build confidence with these questions.

Understanding the AQA A-Level Biology Exam Structure

AQA A-Level Biology (7402) is a linear qualification — all three papers are sat at the end of Year 13. Understanding the structure of each paper is essential for effective revision and exam preparation.

Paper 1 — Topics 1–4 (35% of A-Level)

Duration: 2 hours  |  Marks: 91  |  Question types: Short and long answer, plus comprehension

Covers biological molecules, cells, organisms exchanging substances with their environment, and genetic information, variation and relationships between organisms. Includes questions on relevant practical skills.

Paper 2 — Topics 5–8 (35% of A-Level)

Duration: 2 hours  |  Marks: 91  |  Question types: Short and long answer, plus comprehension

Covers energy transfers in and between organisms, organisms responding to changes in their environment, genetics populations evolution and ecosystems, and the control of gene expression. Includes questions on relevant practical skills.

Paper 3 — All Topics (30% of A-Level)

Duration: 2 hours  |  Marks: 78  |  Question types: Structured questions, critical analysis of experimental data, plus one 25-mark essay (choice of two titles)

This is the synoptic paper. It draws on content from across all 8 topics and tests your ability to make connections between different areas of biology. The 25-mark essay is worth approximately 10% of the entire A-Level and is where many students either gain or lose a grade boundary.

Important: At least 15% of the overall AQA A-Level Biology assessment tests knowledge, skills and understanding in relation to practical work. 10% requires mathematical skills at Level 2 or above. I make sure my students are prepared for both.

For the full specification, visit the official AQA A-Level Biology 7402 specification page.

The 8 AQA A-Level Biology Topics I Cover

I cover every topic in the AQA 7402 specification, tailoring each session to the areas where you need the most help. Here is an overview of the 8 topics and the key challenges within each:

1

Biological Molecules

Carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, nucleic acids, ATP, water, and inorganic ions. This is foundation knowledge that underpins the entire course. Students often underestimate its importance early on.

2

Cells

Cell structure and microscopy, transport across cell membranes, cell recognition and the immune system. Includes practical techniques that are frequently examined.

3

Organisms Exchange Substances with Their Environment

Gas exchange, digestion and absorption, mass transport in animals and plants. Questions often link structure to function — a key AQA theme.

4

Genetic Information, Variation and Relationships Between Organisms

DNA, genes and chromosomes, DNA and protein synthesis, genetic diversity, taxonomy and biodiversity. Many students find meiosis and genetic variation particularly challenging.

5

Energy Transfers in and Between Organisms

Photosynthesis, respiration, energy and ecosystems, nutrient cycles. The biochemistry of respiration and photosynthesis is where many students struggle most.

6

Organisms Respond to Changes in Their Internal and External Environments

Stimuli, nervous coordination and muscles, homeostasis. Nerve impulse transmission and the sliding filament theory require careful explanation.

7

Genetics, Populations, Evolution and Ecosystems

Inheritance, populations, evolution, ecosystems. Includes Hardy-Weinberg calculations and chi-squared tests — the mathematical element that many students find daunting.

8

The Control of Gene Expression

Gene expression, recombinant DNA technology, gene cloning and genetic fingerprinting. This topic is often taught last and revised least — but it appears in Paper 2 and the synoptic Paper 3.

For past papers, mark schemes and examiner reports, visit the AQA Biology 7402 assessment resources page.

AQA A-Level Biology Required Practicals

AQA has 12 required practicals that you must understand for the written exams. At least 15% of the marks across all three papers relate to practical skills. I make sure my students understand the principles behind each practical, not just the method — because that is what AQA examiners test.

1

Investigation into the effect of a named variable on the rate of an enzyme-catalysed reaction

2

Preparation of stained squashes of cells from plant root tips

3

Production of a dilution series of a solute to calibrate a colorimeter

4

Investigation into the effect of a named variable on the permeability of cell-surface membranes

5

Dissection of animal or plant gas exchange or mass transport system

6

Use of aseptic techniques to investigate the effect of antimicrobial substances

7

Use of chromatography to investigate the pigments isolated from leaves

8

Investigation into the effect of a named variable on the rate of respiration

9

Investigation into the effect of a named environmental factor on the distribution of a given species

10

Investigation into the effect of a named factor on animal or plant responses

11

Production of a dilution series of a glucose solution and use of biosensors

12

Investigation into the effect of a named variable on the permeability of cell membranes (using gel electrophoresis or gene technology)
