Why Leeds & Yorkshire Students Choose Online Biology Tuition

Yorkshire is AQA territory. The majority of sixth forms and academies across Leeds, Bradford, Wakefield, and Harrogate follow the AQA specification for A-Level Biology — and with good reason, given that AQA accounts for roughly 55% of all A-Level Biology entries nationally. That means Leeds students need a tutor who genuinely knows the AQA syllabus inside out.

I taught AQA A-Level Biology full-time for five years at Gower College Swansea. I know the specification, the mark schemes, and the patterns that examiners look for. That is a rare combination — most online tutors have only studied AQA as a student, not taught it as their day-to-day job in a classroom for half a decade.

Because all my tuition is delivered online, Leeds students get access to a specialist who has taught thousands of AQA lessons without being limited to whoever happens to live nearby. There is no commuting across Leeds in rush hour traffic, no cancellations because of weather, and every session is recorded so you can rewatch it during revision.

Why this matters for Leeds students: Online tuition means you are not limited to local tutors. You get a Chartered Biologist with 25+ years of teaching experience and hands-on AQA expertise — regardless of whether you live in Headingley, Horsforth, or Harrogate.

What My Students and Parents Say

25+ Years Teaching A-Level

“Tyrone is one of the best tutors I have ever had! He always explains topics in a clear manner and repeats concepts again to embed the understanding of the content. He uploads the session notes on the student portal which is an easy website to navigate. The student portal contains a vast array of resources such as topic notes, past paper questions, questions by topic, revision notes and student activity workbooks. I would definitely recommend Tyrone as a Biology Tutor.”

— Elias, A-Level Biology Student

“Tyrone has been really good for my son. He has been tutoring my son since the start of the A-Level course as I thought my son would struggle as he is not the most academic of students. He has really blossomed under Tyrone’s tutorage and has become much more confident in the subject. My son achieved a high B in his Biology AS level in November which is carried over to his A-Level — I think it stunned his teachers as they had him pegged at a C/D. Tyrone is knowledgeable, explains things clearly and takes his time to ensure that the student understands the topic. He is patient and supportive and has encouraged my son to do his best. I could not have asked for more and I would definitely recommend him.”

— Penny Haynes, Parent (Cambridge International Board)

“My daughter has been having biology tutoring with Tyrone throughout Year 13 and is finding it hugely beneficial. The way he tailors the content to what she needs to cover is really important, the fact that Tyrone goes at her pace is so helpful and — in her words — ‘he’s just much better than my teachers’. From a parent perspective Tyrone is reliable, booking and paying is easy and I can see that my daughter is more engaged in a topic that she does find tricky. I would recommend Tyrone without hesitation.”

— Julie, Parent

How I Help Leeds A-Level Biology Students Succeed

AQA Expertise

Five years teaching AQA full-time means I know the specification thoroughly — the 25-mark essay, the practical endorsement, the synoptic questions that catch students out in Paper 3. Most Leeds students sit AQA, and I know exactly what the examiners expect.

Exam Technique Coaching

Understanding the Biology is only half the battle. I teach students how to structure answers, use command words correctly, and hit every mark scheme point. As a former examiner, I have seen thousands of scripts and know precisely where marks are lost.

Past Paper Practice & Analysis

We work through real past papers together, with me explaining exactly how the mark scheme works and why certain answers get full marks while others do not. I also prepare students for the practical endorsement assessments that form part of every exam board’s requirements.

Recorded Sessions & Student Portal

Every session is recorded so students can rewatch explanations during revision. I also provide a dedicated student portal with topic notes, past paper questions by topic, revision notes, and activity workbooks — all tailored to the student’s exam board.

Supporting Leeds Students’ University Ambitions

Many of my students are working towards competitive university offers in Biological Sciences, Medicine, Veterinary Science, and Dentistry. Here are the typical A-Level Biology grade requirements for universities popular with Yorkshire students:

University of Leeds

Medicine: AAA | Biological Sciences: ABB–BBB

One of the Russell Group’s strongest biosciences faculties, with purpose-built labs and strong graduate employment. Biology at Leeds offers excellent research-led teaching across ecology, genetics, and microbiology.

University of York

Biology: AAB–ABB | Biomedical Science: AAB

Consistently ranked among the top 10 for Biological Sciences in the UK. York’s Biology department is known for its research excellence in evolution, ecology, and molecular cell biology.

University of Bradford

Biomedical Science: BCC–BBC | Pharmacy: BBB

Strong healthcare and biomedical science programmes with excellent links to the NHS. Bradford’s pharmacology and biomedical courses offer practical experience alongside academic study.

University of Sheffield

Medicine: AAA | Biomedical Science: AAB–ABB

Another Russell Group university within easy reach of Leeds. Sheffield’s Department of Animal and Plant Sciences and its Medical School are both highly rated for research and teaching quality.

Of course, these are just the local options. Many of my students go on to study at Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial, Edinburgh, UCL, and other top universities across the UK. A strong A-Level Biology grade opens doors wherever you choose to apply.

Exam Boards Used by Leeds & Yorkshire Schools

1

AQA — The Yorkshire Standard

AQA is the most widely used exam board across Yorkshire. Academies, state sixth forms, and many grammar schools in the Leeds, Wakefield, Bradford, and Harrogate areas follow the AQA A-Level Biology specification. I taught AQA full-time for 5 years, so I know the specification, the Paper 3 essay, and the required practical endorsements thoroughly.

2

OCR A & OCR B — Some Sixth Forms and Colleges

A number of independent schools and some sixth form colleges in the region use OCR A (which is the more traditional specification) or OCR B (Advancing Biology), which takes a more context-led approach. I cover both thoroughly.

3

Edexcel A & Edexcel B — Independent Schools

Edexcel A (Salters-Nuffield) and Edexcel B are sometimes used by independent schools in the Yorkshire region. As a former Edexcel examiner, I have direct insight into how Edexcel papers are marked and what the examiners are looking for.

4

IB & Cambridge International — International Schools

Some international and bilingual schools in Leeds and the surrounding area follow the IB Diploma or Cambridge International (CIE 9700) syllabus. I cover both, including the IB Internal Assessment and extended essay support.

Frequently Asked Questions — Biology Tuition in Leeds

A-Level Biology is a significant step up from GCSE. In 2024, while 95.5% of students passed, only 27.7% achieved an A or A*. The syllabus is much larger than GCSE, the questions demand application rather than recall, and topics like biological molecules, protein synthesis, and respiration trip up many students.

The jump from GCSE to A-Level catches people off guard because the depth of understanding expected is so much greater. A specialist tutor who knows the mark schemes inside out can make a real difference — showing you exactly what examiners are looking for and how to structure answers that pick up full marks.

Every session is tailored to the student’s exam board and their specific weak areas. A typical session might involve working through a tricky topic with clear explanations, then applying that knowledge to past paper questions with detailed mark scheme analysis.

I use a shared whiteboard and screen sharing so we can work through diagrams and data together in real time. All sessions are recorded so students can rewatch them during revision. Between sessions, I upload topic notes and resources to a dedicated student portal. I also keep parents updated on progress so everyone knows how things are going.

Absolutely. I have a 100% grade improvement rate across all my students. Many students come to me after receiving disappointing mock results or predicted grades, and with the right approach they improve significantly.

One parent, Penny, came to me because her son was predicted a C or D — he went on to achieve a high B at AS Level, which stunned his teachers. The key is diagnosing exactly where the gaps are, building a targeted plan, and working through it systematically. I offer a free 20-minute consultation where we can discuss your child’s current situation and what realistic improvement looks like.

Yes. I offer a free 20-minute video consultation where we can discuss the student’s current grade, target grade, exam board, and any specific areas they are struggling with. There is no obligation to book after the consultation — it is simply a chance to see if I am the right fit. You can book a consultation here.

Yes. Because all my tuition is delivered online, I work with students across the world. I currently have students in Kuwait, France, Switzerland, Gibraltar, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Hong Kong. Online sessions work well across different time zones, and I cover international syllabuses including Cambridge International (CIE 9700) and IB Biology alongside all UK exam boards.

Every student gets access to a dedicated online portal containing topic notes, past paper questions organised by topic, revision notes, student activity workbooks, and recorded session videos they can rewatch at any time. The portal is tailored to their exam board so everything is relevant to their specific specification.

Students find the recorded sessions especially useful close to exams because they can revisit tricky explanations as many times as they need. You can find out more on the resources page.

Booking is straightforward. You can book through the website, by email at tyrone@biologyeducation.co.uk, or by calling +44 7969 418179. Full details of how payment works are available on the charges page.

Most families start with a free 20-minute consultation to make sure everything is the right fit before committing to regular sessions.
