Why London Students Choose Online Biology Tuition
London is home to some of the best sixth forms and colleges in the country. Schools like Westminster, St Paul’s, City of London, Latymer Upper, and the London Academy of Excellence regularly send students to top universities for biology-related degrees. But that also means the pressure is intense, and the competition for places at universities like Imperial, UCL, and King’s is fierce.
I work with London students every week. What I hear again and again is that school teaching alone isn’t quite enough — lessons move fast, class sizes are big, and there isn’t always time to go back over the tricky bits. That’s where I come in.
Online tuition actually works brilliantly for London students. There’s no battling across the city on the Tube or sitting in traffic. You log on from home, we share a screen, and we get straight to work on exactly what you need. Every session is recorded too, so you can rewatch it during revision — students tell me that’s one of the most useful things about working with me.
What My Students and Parents Say
I have a 100% grade improvement rate across all exam boards and all students. But don’t just take my word for it — here’s what students and parents have said about working with me.

What Students and Parents Have Told Me Directly
“Tyrone is one of the best tutors I have ever had! He always explains topics in a clear manner and repeats concepts again to embed the understanding of the content. He uploads the session notes on the student portal which is an easy website to navigate. The student portal contains a vast array of resources such as topic notes, past paper questions, questions by topic, revision notes and student activity workbooks. I would definitely recommend Tyrone as a Biology Tutor.”
Elias — A-Level Biology Student
“Tyrone has been really good for my son. He has been tutoring my son since the start of the A-Level course as I thought my son would struggle as he is not the most academic of students. He has really blossomed under Tyrone’s tutorage and has become much more confident in the subject. My son achieved a high B in his Biology AS level in November which is carried over to his A-Level — I think it stunned his teachers as they had him pegged at a C/D. Tyrone is knowledgeable, explains things clearly and takes his time to ensure that the student understands the topic. He is patient and supportive and has encouraged my son to do his best. I could not have asked for more and I would definitely recommend him.”
Penny Haynes — Parent (Cambridge International Board)
“My daughter has been having biology tutoring with Tyrone throughout Year 13 and is finding it hugely beneficial. The way he tailors the content to what she needs to cover is really important, the fact that Tyrone goes at her pace is so helpful and — in her words — ‘he’s just much better than my teachers’. From a parent perspective Tyrone is reliable, booking and paying is easy and I can see that my daughter is more engaged in a topic that she does find tricky. I would recommend Tyrone without hesitation.”

Areas Covered Across London
Because all my tuition is delivered online, location within London doesn’t matter — whether you’re in Kensington or Croydon, Barnet or Bromley, you get exactly the same quality of teaching. I currently work with students from across the capital, including:
I also work with students just outside the M25 — in areas like Surrey, Hertfordshire, Essex, and Kent. Online tuition means geography is never a barrier.

How I Help London A-Level Biology Students
I don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all approach. Every student has different strengths, different weak spots, and different exam boards. But there are a few things that every London student gets when they work with me:
Teaching to Your Specific Exam Board
I don’t teach generic biology. If you’re on AQA, we work through AQA past papers and AQA mark schemes. If you’re on OCR A, everything is tailored to that specification. The content overlaps, but the exam technique is completely different — and that’s where marks are won or lost.
Exam Technique That Gets Marks
Having marked thousands of exam papers as an examiner, I know exactly what earns marks and what doesn’t. I teach my students the precise language, structure, and approach that examiners reward. This is the single biggest factor in improving grades.
Past Paper Practice With Detailed Feedback
We work through real past papers together, and I mark your answers against the official mark scheme with detailed written feedback. You’ll see exactly where you’re dropping marks and how to pick them up. No other form of revision is as effective as this.
Recorded Sessions for Revision
Every lesson is recorded. Students tell me they rewatch recordings before exams, pause and replay tricky explanations, and use them as revision tools. It’s like having a personal revision library built around exactly what you need.
Tuition Options
One-to-One Tuition
Individual sessions lasting one hour, completely tailored to your needs. This is the most effective way to target specific weaknesses and build exam confidence quickly. Most of my London students choose this option.

Sessions with 2–8 other students. A more affordable option that works well if you learn from hearing other people’s questions. Some London students organise groups with classmates from the same school.

A big part of what drives London students is the goal of getting into a competitive university course. Biology is a gateway subject — it opens doors to medicine, dentistry, veterinary science, biomedical sciences, pharmacology, and more. London is surrounded by world-class universities, and the entry requirements are demanding.
I help students build the A-Level Biology grades these courses need. But more than that, I make sure they understand the subject at a depth that will serve them well in interviews and at university. Memorising mark scheme answers will get you through the exam, but genuine understanding is what impresses admissions tutors.
Imperial College London
Typical offer: A*AA for Biological Sciences, A*AA for Medicine. Imperial’s biology courses are research-intensive, and they expect applicants to demonstrate genuine scientific curiosity beyond the specification.
University College London (UCL)
Typical offer: AAA for Biological Sciences, A*AA for Medicine. UCL values breadth of knowledge and the ability to think critically about biological problems — exactly the skills I develop with my students.
King’s College London
Typical offer: AAB for Biomedical Sciences, A*AA for Medicine. This is where I studied Immunology, so I know the academic culture well and what the admissions team looks for.
Queen Mary University of London
Typical offer: ABB–AAB for Biological Sciences. A strong Russell Group option that’s often overlooked. Their research strengths in genetics and ecology are excellent.
Of course, plenty of my London students also apply to Oxford, Cambridge, Edinburgh, Bristol, and other top universities across the UK. The preparation is the same: deep understanding, strong exam technique, and the confidence that comes from genuinely knowing your stuff.
Exam Boards Used by London Schools
One of the first things I ask any new student is which exam board they’re on. It sounds obvious, but you’d be surprised how many students don’t realise that the exam technique that works for AQA won’t necessarily work for OCR, or that Edexcel A and Edexcel B are completely different specifications. Here’s a quick overview of what London schools tend to use:
AQA (7402) — The Most Common Board
Used by roughly 55% of all A-Level Biology students nationally. You’ll find AQA in many London state schools, academies, and some independent schools. It features three papers, including a 25-mark synoptic essay in Paper 3 that catches a lot of students out.
OCR A (H420) — Popular in Grammar Schools
OCR A is the second most common board in England and is particularly popular with grammar schools and selective sixth forms. It’s known for being content-heavy with a strong emphasis on practical skills.
Edexcel A / Salters-Nuffield (9BN0)
Some London independent schools and sixth form colleges use Edexcel A. The Salters-Nuffield approach is context-led, which means topics are introduced through real-world scenarios. The exam style is quite different from AQA.
IB Biology — International Schools
London has a large number of international schools offering the IB Diploma. IB Biology at Higher Level is demanding, with internal assessments, group projects, and a different assessment style to A-Levels. I cover both HL and SL.
Whichever board you’re on, I tailor every session to your exact specification. I have dedicated pages for each exam board with detailed information about how I help students on that particular syllabus:

Yes. All my tuition is delivered online via a professional teaching platform with a shared whiteboard, screen sharing, and recorded sessions. Around half my students are based in London and the South East. Online tuition actually works better for most London students because there’s no wasted commute time — you log in from home and we get straight to work.
Most London schools and sixth forms use either AQA (the most common board nationally, taken by around 55% of students) or OCR A. Some independent schools use Edexcel A (Salters-Nuffield) or Edexcel B, and a number of international schools follow the IB or Cambridge International syllabuses. I cover all of these boards and tailor every session to your specific specification.
One-to-one tuition is £80 per hour Monday to Friday and £120 per hour at weekends. Small group tuition (minimum 4 students) is £50 per hour per student on weekdays and £80 at weekends. I also offer a free 20-minute consultation so we can discuss your needs before you commit to anything.
Absolutely. Many of my London students are applying for medicine, dentistry, biomedical sciences, and veterinary science at universities like Imperial, UCL, King’s, and beyond. I help them achieve the A-Level Biology grades these courses demand, and my teaching covers the depth of understanding that interviewers expect.
I’m a Chartered Biologist (CBiol) registered with the Royal Society of Biology. I have a BSc in Immunology from King’s College London, a research degree in Molecular Pharmacology from Newcastle University, and a PGCE. I spent 18 years teaching A-Level Biology at Gower College Swansea and have worked as an examiner for both WJEC/Eduqas and Edexcel.
We use a professional online teaching platform with a shared interactive whiteboard, screen sharing, and the ability to annotate diagrams together in real time. Every session is recorded so you can rewatch it during revision. I also provide digital notes, past paper questions, and access to a student resource portal. Students regularly tell me they prefer it to in-person tuition because the recordings are invaluable.
Yes. I offer sessions in the evenings and at weekends specifically because I know London students have packed schedules. Most of my London students book regular weekly slots — typically between 5pm and 9pm on weekdays or across Saturday and Sunday. We find a time that works and stick to it.
My main focus is A-Level and IB Biology, which is where my specialist knowledge as a former examiner and Chartered Biologist makes the biggest difference. However, I do occasionally take on GCSE students who are preparing for A-Level and want to build a strong foundation. Get in touch and we can discuss your situation.
For most London families, yes. The average UK tutor charges between £30 and £50 per hour, but rates in London tend to sit at the higher end. What matters is return on investment. Research from the Education Endowment Foundation shows that one-to-one tuition can add up to five months of additional progress. My students consistently improve by at least one full grade — often more — because I combine 25 years of A-Level teaching experience with active examiner insight from WJEC/Eduqas and Edexcel. That knowledge of how marks are actually awarded is something most tutors simply cannot offer.
Getting top grades in A-Level Biology requires three things: deep understanding of core concepts, strong exam technique, and consistent practice with past papers under timed conditions. In 2024, only 27.7% of students nationally achieved an A or above, so it’s a genuinely competitive grade. The students I work with in London who reach A and A* do so because we focus on how marks are awarded — not just what to write, but how examiners want to see it written. As a current examiner, I teach you the precise language and structure that earns full marks on six-mark extended response questions.
