Why Sheffield & South Yorkshire Students Choose Online Biology Tuition
Sheffield is one of the UK’s great university cities, and for good reason — the academic standards across the region are high, and competition for university places in the biological sciences, medicine, and dentistry is fierce. Most sixth forms and colleges across South Yorkshire follow the AQA specification for A-Level Biology, the exam board I taught full-time for five years at Gower College Swansea.
The challenge many Sheffield students face is finding a specialist Biology tutor locally who has genuine exam board expertise. Many of the tutors available through marketplace platforms are undergraduates or recently qualified teachers without examiner experience. Online tuition solves that problem by giving Sheffield students access to a Chartered Biologist and former examiner — someone who has marked papers for Edexcel and knows exactly what examiners are looking for.
I have been delivering online tuition since 2015, long before it became mainstream, and every session is delivered from a purpose-built teaching studio with triple monitors, a professional graphics tablet, and a 1Gb internet connection. My 100% grade improvement rate has been built entirely through online delivery.
What My Students and Parents Say
“Tyrone is one of the best tutors I have ever had! He always explains topics in a clear manner and repeats concepts again to embed the understanding of the content. He uploads the session notes on the student portal which is an easy website to navigate. The student portal contains a vast array of resources such as topic notes, past paper questions, questions by topic, revision notes and student activity workbooks. I would definitely recommend Tyrone as a Biology Tutor.”
“Tyrone has been really good for my son. He has been tutoring my son since the start of the A-Level course as I thought my son would struggle as he is not the most academic of students. He has really blossomed under Tyrone’s tutorage and has become much more confident in the subject. My son achieved a high B in his Biology AS level in November which is carried over to his A-Level — I think it stunned his teachers as they had him pegged at a C/D. Tyrone is knowledgeable, explains things clearly and takes his time to ensure that the student understands the topic.”
“My daughter has been having biology tutoring with Tyrone throughout Year 13 and is finding it hugely beneficial. The way he tailors the content to what she needs to cover is really important, the fact that Tyrone goes at her pace is so helpful and — in her words — ‘he’s just much better than my teachers’. From a parent perspective Tyrone is reliable, booking and paying is easy and I can see that my daughter is more engaged in a topic that she does find tricky. I would recommend Tyrone without hesitation.”

How I Help Sheffield A-Level Biology Students Succeed
Targeted Grade Recovery
Many Sheffield students come to me after disappointing mock results or a poor AS performance. I diagnose exactly where the gaps are — whether that is content knowledge, exam technique, or both — and build a focused plan to close them. Every student I have worked with has improved their grade, including students who were predicted a D and went on to achieve a B.
Examiner-Led Exam Technique
As a former examiner for Edexcel and WJEC/Eduqas, I know exactly how marks are awarded and where students lose them unnecessarily. I teach command word decoding, mark scheme analysis, and answer structuring — the skills that separate a C from an A.
CPAC & Practical Skills
Practical-based questions appear across all papers and are a common source of lost marks. I cover the required practicals for all exam boards and help students prepare for both the practical endorsement and the written questions that test practical understanding.
Recorded Sessions & Student Portal
Every session is recorded so students can rewatch explanations during revision. The dedicated student portal provides topic notes, past paper questions by topic, revision notes, and activity workbooks — all tailored to the student’s exam board.

Supporting Sheffield Students’ University Ambitions
Sheffield is a major university city, and many of my students are working towards competitive offers in Medicine, Dentistry, Biomedical Science, and the Biological Sciences. Here are the typical A-Level Biology grade requirements for universities popular with South Yorkshire students:
University of Sheffield
A Russell Group university with an outstanding medical school and one of the UK’s top-ranked biological sciences departments. Sheffield’s Department of Animal and Plant Sciences and its Molecular Biology and Biotechnology department are research-intensive with excellent graduate employment rates.
Sheffield Hallam University
Sheffield Hallam offers strong applied bioscience and biomedical science programmes with a practical, career-focused approach. The university has invested heavily in its science laboratories and has strong NHS and industry placement links across South Yorkshire.
University of Leeds
Just 30 miles north of Sheffield, Leeds is a Russell Group university with world-class biological sciences and a highly competitive medical school. Many Sheffield students apply here and to York as their first-choice universities.
University of Nottingham
About an hour from Sheffield, Nottingham is a Russell Group university with excellent biological sciences, a respected medical school, and one of only a handful of UK universities offering Veterinary Medicine. A popular choice for South Yorkshire students.
Strong A-Level Biology grades also open doors to Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial, Edinburgh, Manchester, and other leading universities across the UK. Whatever the target, I help students achieve the grades they need.
Exam Boards Used by Sheffield & South Yorkshire Schools
AQA — The South Yorkshire Standard
AQA is the dominant exam board across South Yorkshire. Most state schools, academies, and sixth form colleges in Sheffield, Rotherham, Doncaster, and Barnsley follow the AQA specification. I taught AQA full-time for 5 years, so I know the specification, the 25-mark essay, and the required practical endorsements thoroughly.
OCR A — Some Independent and Grammar Schools
Several independent schools in the Sheffield area use OCR A, which is known for being content-heavy with challenging synoptic questions. I cover the full OCR A specification including the extended response questions that appear in the later papers.
Edexcel A & B — Independent Schools
Edexcel A (Salters-Nuffield) and Edexcel B appear in some independent schools across the region. As a former Edexcel examiner, I have direct insight into how these papers are marked and what the examiners expect.
IB & Cambridge International
Some international schools in the region follow the IB Diploma or Cambridge International (CIE 9700) syllabus. I cover both, including the IB Internal Assessment and extended essay support.

At minimum, a relevant degree. Ideally a PGCE or other teaching qualification, which confirms they have been trained to teach rather than just knowing the subject. Examiner experience is a major advantage because it means the tutor understands how papers are marked from the inside. Chartered status with a professional body shows ongoing professional recognition.
I hold a PGCE from the University of Wales, Chartered Biologist status (CBiol) with the Royal Society of Biology, and I am a former examiner for both WJEC/Eduqas and Edexcel. My academic background includes a BSc in Immunology from King’s College London and a research degree in Molecular Pharmacology from Newcastle University. I have over 25 years of A-Level teaching experience. You can read more on my about page.
Absolutely. With the right approach, most students can improve significantly. I have a 100% grade improvement rate across all students I have worked with. One parent, Penny, contacted me because her son was predicted a C or D — he went on to achieve a high B that stunned his school teachers.
The key is diagnosing exactly where the gaps are, building a targeted plan, and focusing on both content knowledge and exam technique. Even students who come to me late in Year 13 can make meaningful progress if the work is focused. I offer a free 20-minute consultation to assess where the student is and build a realistic improvement plan.
Yes. I offer a free 20-minute video consultation where we can discuss the student’s current grade, target grade, exam board, and any specific areas they are struggling with.
