Why Swansea Students Trust a Tutor Who Taught at Their College

I am not a London-based tutor offering Swansea students a generic online service. I live in Swansea. I taught A-Level Biology at Gower College Swansea for 18 years — around 13 of those on the WJEC specification and over 5 on AQA. I walked the same corridors, used the same labs, and taught the same course that many Swansea students are studying right now.

Gower College Swansea is by far the largest A-Level provider in the Swansea area, with over 1,100 A-Level entries in 2024 and a 99% pass rate. Most of the secondary schools in Swansea that do not have their own sixth forms — Bishopston, Pentrehafod, Penyrheol, Dylan Thomas — send their students directly to Gower College. Many of those students will be taught Biology by teachers I worked alongside for nearly two decades.

I have also examined for both WJEC/Eduqas and Edexcel, so I have marked the very papers that Swansea students sit. I know what the QER mark scheme rewards, where students typically lose marks, and which topics consistently cause the most difficulty. That insider knowledge shapes every session I deliver.

All my tuition is delivered online from a purpose-built teaching studio here in Swansea, with triple monitors, a professional graphics tablet, and a 1Gb connection. Sessions are recorded so students can rewatch explanations, and my student portal provides board-specific notes, past papers by topic, and workbooks. I have been delivering online tuition since 2015, and my 100% grade improvement rate speaks for itself.

Why this matters for Swansea students: You are not just getting a WJEC specialist — you are getting a tutor who taught at Gower College for 18 years and knows the Swansea education landscape inside out. Whether your child attends Gower College, Olchfa, Gowerton, or a school in Neath or Llanelli, I understand exactly where they are and what they need.

“Tyrone has been really good for my son. He has been tutoring my son since the start of the A-Level course as I thought my son would struggle as he is not the most academic of students. He has really blossomed under Tyrone’s tutorage and has become much more confident in the subject. My son achieved a high B in his Biology AS level in November which is carried over to his A-Level — I think it stunned his teachers as they had him pegged at a C/D.”

Areas Covered Across Swansea & West Wales

All tuition is delivered online, so I work with students from across Swansea, Neath Port Talbot, Llanelli, and West Wales. Whether you are in Mumbles, Morriston, or a village in the Gower, you get the same expert tuition from a Swansea-based WJEC specialist.

Swansea Centre Uplands Sketty Mumbles Killay Dunvant Bishopston Morriston Gorseinon Pontarddulais Llansamlet Clydach Neath Port Talbot Pontardawe Llanelli Ammanford Gower Peninsula

West Wales coverage: I also tutor students across Carmarthenshire, Neath Port Talbot, and into Ceredigion. Many students in rural West Wales struggle to find specialist A-Level Biology tutors locally — online tuition removes that barrier entirely, giving every student access to a Chartered Biologist and former WJEC examiner.

How I Help Swansea A-Level Biology Students Succeed

18 Years of Gower College Knowledge

I know the WJEC Biology specification inside out because I taught it for 13 years at Gower College. I understand which topics students find hardest, where marks are lost in Unit 3 (photosynthesis, respiration) and Unit 4 (genetics, evolution), and how to structure QER answers for Band 3. If your child is at Gower College, I know exactly what they are covering and when.

WJEC Examiner Insight

As a former WJEC/Eduqas examiner, I have sat in marking rooms and applied the banded mark schemes that determine your child’s grade. QER questions — worth 9 marks each — appear on every paper and require sequential reasoning, not just facts. I train students to structure their answers the way examiners expect.

Unit 5 Practical Assessment

WJEC’s Unit 5 is a formal practical assessment worth 10% of the A-Level — unlike England’s pass/fail endorsement, it directly affects the grade. Having supervised this assessment for years, I help students prepare for both the Experimental Task and the Practical Analysis Task with confidence.

Recorded Sessions & Student Portal

Every session is recorded so students can rewatch explanations during revision — something no in-person tutor can offer. My student portal provides WJEC-specific topic notes, past paper questions organised by topic, revision notes, and activity workbooks.

Supporting Swansea Students’ University Ambitions

Swansea is a university city with strong biological sciences programmes, and many local students aspire to careers in Medicine, Biomedical Science, Marine Biology, and the wider life sciences. Strong A-Level Biology grades are the foundation, and WJEC expertise is what unlocks them.

Swansea University

Biology: ABB–BBB | Marine Biology: ABB–BBB | Medical Biochemistry: AAB–BCC | Zoology: ABB–BBB

Swansea University’s Marine Biology programme is one of the best in the UK, benefiting from the Gower coastline and dedicated research facilities. The Medical Biochemistry programme is a particularly smart pathway — it guarantees a Graduate Entry Medicine interview on successful completion. Swansea also accepts the Welsh Baccalaureate as equivalent to one A-Level and offers Welsh language scholarships.

Swansea University — Graduate Entry Medicine (MBBCh)

Graduate entry only | 2:1 degree (any subject) | GAMSAT or UCAT

While Swansea’s medicine programme is graduate-entry only (so A-Level students cannot apply directly), many Swansea students plan a pathway through undergraduate bioscience degrees before applying. The Medical Biochemistry route is the most popular. Strong A-Level Biology grades lay the groundwork for this longer-term plan.

Cardiff University (Russell Group)

Medicine: AAA | Dentistry: AAA | Biological Sciences: AAB–BBB

Just an hour east on the M4, Cardiff University is the top destination for many Swansea students. Its medical and dental schools are among the most competitive in Wales, and contextualised offers are available for Welsh-domiciled students. Cardiff accepts the Welsh Baccalaureate for many courses.

University of South Wales

Biology: CCC | Medical Sciences: BBB | Biomedical Science: CCC

USW’s Medical Sciences programme feeds directly into Cardiff University’s Graduate Entry Medicine route, making it an excellent stepping stone for aspiring medics who need to build their grades first. Campuses at Treforest and Newport are accessible from the Swansea area.

Strong A-Level Biology grades also open doors to Bristol, Exeter, Bath, Oxford, Cambridge, and other leading universities across the UK. Whatever the target, I help students achieve the grades they need.

Exam Boards Used by Swansea & West Wales Schools

1

WJEC — Used by Every State School in Swansea

WJEC is the sole awarding body for state-funded schools and colleges across Wales. Whether your child attends Gower College Swansea, Olchfa School, Gowerton School, Bishop Gore, or any of the Swansea sixth forms, they will be sitting WJEC Biology papers. I taught WJEC for 13 years at Gower College and examined for WJEC/Eduqas — nobody in the Swansea area has more direct experience with this specification.

2

Eduqas — WJEC’s English-Regulated Brand

Eduqas is used in England and regulated by Ofqual. The content is virtually identical to WJEC but the assessment is linear rather than unitised. Some independent schools may use Eduqas. As a former Eduqas examiner, I cover both versions comprehensively.

3

Other Boards — Independent Schools & International Students

Independent schools like Ffynone House School in Swansea may use AQA, Edexcel, OCR, or Cambridge International. I cover all boards — I taught AQA full-time for over 5 years at Gower College and have examined for Edexcel.

Frequently Asked Questions — Biology Tuition in Swansea

Yes. I spent 18 years at Gower College Swansea and built my career there. I know the Biology department, the teaching approach, and the way the WJEC specification is delivered. That institutional knowledge means I understand exactly where Gower College students are in the course at any given point and what they need to focus on. Whether your child is at the Gorseinon Campus or has come to GCS from one of the feeder schools that lack their own sixth forms, I know the system they are in.

The UK average for A-Level Biology tutoring is around £30 to £50 per hour. My one-to-one rate is £80 per hour on weekdays and £120 per hour at weekends. This reflects my Chartered Biologist status, former examiner experience for WJEC/Eduqas and Edexcel, 18 years of full-time teaching at Gower College, and a purpose-built online studio. Every session includes access to a student portal with topic notes, past papers by topic, and recorded session videos. Small group tuition is available from £50 per hour per student (minimum 4 students). I offer a free 20-minute consultation before you commit.

Absolutely. All Swansea state schools use the WJEC specification, which I taught for 13 years and have examined. Whether your child attends Olchfa School (which consistently ranks among the top state schools in Wales), Gowerton School, Bishop Gore, Morriston Comprehensive, or one of the Welsh-medium schools like Ysgol Gŵyr or Bryn Tawe, I know the specification they are following inside out. The same applies to students at NPTC Group in Neath or Coleg Sir Gâr in Llanelli.

QER stands for Quality of Extended Response. These questions appear on every WJEC and Eduqas Biology paper, typically worth 9 marks each. Unlike normal structured questions where each correct point earns a mark, QER answers are assessed holistically using a banded mark scheme — Band 3 (7–9), Band 2 (4–6), or Band 1 (1–3). The key difference is that how you write matters as much as what you write. Two students can include the same facts but score in different bands based on structure, reasoning, and vocabulary. As a former WJEC examiner, I train students to consistently hit Band 3. I have also written a comprehensive QER guide on my website.

Yes. I have a 100% grade improvement rate across all students I have worked with. One parent, Penny, contacted me because her son was predicted a C or D — he went on to achieve a high B that stunned his school teachers. Another student went from B/C to A* in just 8 months. The key is diagnosing exactly where the gaps are, building a targeted plan, and working on both content knowledge and exam technique. I offer a free 20-minute consultation to assess where the student is.

Yes. I offer a free 20-minute video consultation where we can discuss the student’s current grade, target grade, exam board, and any specific areas they are struggling with. There is no obligation to book. You can book a consultation here.

I am a fully qualified teacher with a PGCE from the University of Wales. I hold Chartered Biologist status (CBiol) with the Royal Society of Biology. I am a former examiner for both WJEC/Eduqas and Edexcel, and I spent 18 years as a full-time classroom teacher at Gower College Swansea. My academic background includes a BSc in Immunology from King’s College London and a research degree in Molecular Pharmacology from Newcastle University. You can read more on my about page.

WJEC is not necessarily harder in content, but it presents different challenges. The mark schemes are widely considered to be more specific than those of other boards, meaning precision in language and terminology matters even more. The QER questions require a particular style of structured, sequential writing that other boards do not assess in the same way. There are also fewer revision resources available for WJEC compared to AQA (which has roughly 55% of the UK market), making specialist tuition even more valuable. Having taught both AQA (5 years) and WJEC (13 years), I understand the differences inside out.
