Your Local A-Level Biology Specialist — Based in Swansea

I’m not a tutor based in London or Manchester offering Welsh students a generic service. I live in Wales, I taught A-Level Biology at Gower College Swansea for 18 years, and I’m a former examiner for WJEC/Eduqas — the board that almost every Welsh school and college uses. When I say I understand the Welsh education system, I mean it.

During my 18 years at Gower College, I taught WJEC Biology for around 13 years and AQA for over 5 years. That gives me deep knowledge of both the board that Welsh students sit and the largest board in England. I’ve marked thousands of WJEC exam papers, so I know exactly what the examiners are looking for — the specific language, the structure, and the level of detail that earns full marks.

All my tuition is delivered online, which means it doesn’t matter whether you’re in Swansea, Cardiff, Wrexham, or a village in Ceredigion. You get exactly the same quality of teaching — a shared interactive whiteboard, screen sharing, and every session recorded so you can rewatch it during revision.

Why this matters: Most online tutors have never taught WJEC. They’ll try to adapt their AQA or OCR knowledge, but the exam technique is different, the practical assessment is different, and the Welsh environmental contexts that appear in questions are different. I’ve lived and worked inside the Welsh system for nearly two decades — that experience cannot be replicated.

What My Students and Parents Say

How I Help Welsh A-Level Biology Students

Teaching in Wales for nearly two decades means I don’t just know the content — I understand the culture, the pressures, and the specific challenges Welsh students face. Here’s what every Welsh student gets when they work with me:

WJEC Exam Board Expertise

Most of my Welsh students sit WJEC, and I’ve been teaching and examining this specification for years. I know the Unit structure, the practical examination format, the Welsh environmental contexts that appear in questions, and exactly how WJEC examiners mark extended written answers. This is specialist knowledge that most online tutors simply don’t have.

Exam Technique That Gets Marks

Having marked thousands of WJEC and Edexcel exam papers, I know exactly what earns marks and what doesn’t. I teach my students the precise language, structure, and approach that examiners reward. This is the single biggest factor in improving grades — and it’s something you can only learn from someone who has been on the inside.

Past Paper Practice With Detailed Feedback

We work through real past papers together, and I mark your answers against the official mark scheme with detailed written feedback. You’ll see exactly where you’re dropping marks and how to pick them up. For WJEC students, I also help with the practical examination preparation that other tutors often overlook.

Recorded Sessions for Revision

Every lesson is recorded. Students tell me they rewatch recordings before exams, pause and replay tricky explanations, and use them as revision tools. It’s like having a personal revision library built around exactly what you need — and it’s especially useful for Welsh students in rural areas who may not have access to other support.

What’s included in every session: Past paper questions, detailed topic notes, a full video recording of the lesson, and access to my student resource portal with digital materials organised by topic and exam board.

Tuition Options

One-to-One Tuition

Individual sessions lasting one hour, completely tailored to your needs. This is the most effective way to target specific weaknesses and build exam confidence quickly. Most of my Welsh students choose this option.

Small Group Tuition

Sessions with 2–8 other students. A more affordable option that works well if you learn from hearing other people’s questions. Some Welsh students organise groups with classmates from the same school or college.

Supporting Welsh Students’ University Ambitions

Wales has excellent universities, and many of my Welsh students are applying for competitive courses in biological sciences, medicine, dentistry, veterinary science, and related subjects. A strong A-Level Biology grade is essential for these courses, and the difference between a B and an A can determine whether you get an offer.

I help students build the grades these courses require. But more than that, I make sure they understand the subject at a depth that will serve them in university interviews and beyond. Memorising mark scheme answers will get you through the exam, but genuine understanding is what impresses admissions tutors.

1

Cardiff University

Typical offer: AAA for Medicine, AAB–ABB for Biological Sciences. Cardiff is one of the top Russell Group universities for biosciences and one of the most popular choices for Welsh students. Their School of Biosciences has excellent research strengths in neuroscience and infection.

2

Swansea University

Typical offer: ABB–BBB for Biological Sciences, AAA for Medical School. Swansea’s Medical School is relatively new but growing rapidly, and their biosciences programmes benefit from strong links with the NHS in Wales. This is the university closest to where I’m based.

3

Bangor University

Typical offer: BBC–ABB for Biological Sciences. Bangor has an outstanding reputation for marine biology, ecology, and environmental science, drawing on its location between Snowdonia and the Menai Strait. An excellent choice for students interested in fieldwork-based biology.

4

Aberystwyth University

Typical offer: BBC–BBB for Biological Sciences. Aberystwyth has strong programmes in genetics, microbiology, and animal behaviour, with excellent student satisfaction scores. A good option for students who want a supportive learning environment.

Of course, many Welsh students also apply to universities across England and beyond — including Oxford, Cambridge, Bristol, Imperial, and Edinburgh. The preparation is the same: deep understanding, strong exam technique, and the confidence that comes from genuinely knowing your stuff.

WJEC and Exam Boards Used by Welsh Schools

The vast majority of Welsh schools and colleges use WJEC for A-Level Biology. This is the board I know best — I taught it for around 13 years at Gower College and I’ve worked as a WJEC/Eduqas examiner. But not every Welsh student is on WJEC. Some independent schools in Wales follow AQA, Edexcel, or even IB specifications. I cover all of them.

1

WJEC — The Welsh Standard

Used by the majority of Welsh schools and colleges. WJEC A-Level Biology consists of five units including a practical examination (Unit 5), which is unique among the major exam boards. The specification has a strong emphasis on Welsh agricultural and environmental contexts, and the essay-style questions require clear, structured responses. As a former WJEC examiner, I know exactly what the markers want to see.

2

Eduqas — WJEC’s England Specification

Eduqas is essentially WJEC’s offering for schools in England. The content is very similar to WJEC but there are important differences in assessment structure and weighting. If your school uses Eduqas rather than WJEC, I know both specifications intimately and will tailor every session accordingly.

3

AQA (7402) — Used by Some Independent Schools

I taught AQA for over 5 years at Gower College, so I have direct classroom experience with this specification. AQA is the most common board nationally (around 55% of all entries) and features a demanding synoptic essay in Paper 3 that catches a lot of students out.

4

Other Boards — Edexcel, OCR, IB, Cambridge International

Some Welsh independent schools and international schools use Edexcel A, Edexcel B, OCR A, IB Biology, or Cambridge International. I cover every one of these boards and have dedicated pages for each specification with detailed information about my approach.

Whichever board you’re on, I tailor every session to your exact specification. Here are my dedicated exam board pages:

Tuition Fees for Welsh Students

My fees are the same for all students regardless of location. I believe in being upfront about pricing — no hidden costs, no surprise charges, and no long-term contracts. You pay per session and can stop at any time.

Frequently Asked Questions — Biology Tuition in Wales

One-to-one tuition is £80 per hour Monday to Friday and £120 per hour at weekends. Small group tuition (minimum 4 students) is £50 per hour per student on weekdays and £80 per hour per student at weekends. The average UK tutor charges between £30 and £50 per hour — my higher rate reflects 25 years of A-Level teaching experience, Chartered Biologist status, and active examiner insight from WJEC/Eduqas and Edexcel. I also offer a free 20-minute consultation so we can discuss your needs before you commit.

Each board has its own challenges. WJEC — the standard in Wales — places strong emphasis on practical assessment and includes Welsh environmental contexts. AQA (used by around 55% of UK students) has a demanding synoptic essay in Paper 3. OCR A is content-heavy, while Edexcel A takes a context-led approach that some find harder to revise for. The board matters less than understanding what your specific examiners want to see. As someone who has examined for both WJEC/Eduqas and Edexcel, I know the marking expectations inside out for every major specification.

The ideal time is at the start of Year 12 to build strong foundations from the beginning. But the most common entry points I see are after poor mock results in Year 12 or at the start of Year 13 when students realise the jump from AS content is significant. The closer you leave it to exams, the harder it is to close gaps. If your child has just received disappointing mock results, now is the time to act — not in April. I offer a free 20-minute consultation to assess where the student is and what support they need.

Yes. I offer a free 20-minute video consultation where we discuss the student’s current grade, target grade, exam board, and any specific areas of difficulty. There’s no obligation to book after the consultation — it’s simply an honest conversation about whether my tuition is the right fit. You can book a consultation directly through my website.

I cover every major UK exam board: WJEC (the standard in Wales), Eduqas (the England version of WJEC), AQA, Edexcel A (Salters-Nuffield), Edexcel B, OCR A, OCR B (Advancing Biology), IB Biology, and Cambridge International (CIE 9700). Most of my Welsh students are on WJEC, but I also work with students at independent schools in Wales who follow other specifications. Every session is tailored to your exact board and specification.

I’m a fully qualified teacher with a PGCE from the University of Wales. I’m also a Chartered Biologist (CBiol) registered with the Royal Society of Biology, which is the highest professional standard in biological sciences. I spent 18 years teaching A-Level Biology at Gower College Swansea and have worked as a former examiner for both WJEC/Eduqas and Edexcel. I hold a BSc in Immunology from King’s College London and a research degree in Molecular Pharmacology from Newcastle University.

Yes. I offer sessions on both weekdays and weekends, with weekend sessions available at a different rate. I also run holiday intensive sessions which are particularly popular during the Easter revision period and half-terms. Many of my Welsh students book additional sessions during the school holidays to consolidate topics covered during term time or to get ahead on the next module.

My main focus is A-Level and IB Biology, which is where my specialist knowledge as a former examiner and Chartered Biologist makes the biggest difference. However, many A-Level students have gaps from GCSE that hold them back — particularly in areas like cell biology, genetics, and biological molecules. I regularly help students strengthen these GCSE foundations as part of their A-Level support, which is especially important for students who found the transition from GCSE to A-Level difficult.
