My approach combines examining insight from UK boards with deep understanding of the Cambridge International 9700 syllabus. Every session is tailored to your specific needs.
Examiner-Informed Teaching
Having examined for WJEC/Eduqas and Edexcel, I understand how structured questions are marked at A-Level. I teach you the precise language, level of detail, and answer structure that examiners reward.
Paper 4 & 5 Specialist Preparation
Paper 4 (A2 Structured Questions, 38% of A-Level) and Paper 5 (Planning, Analysis and Evaluation) are where most marks are gained and lost. I give these papers focused attention.
Past Paper Practice
We work through real Cambridge International past papers together, with detailed feedback using actual mark schemes. I explain not just what the correct answer is, but why other answers lose marks.
Practical Paper Preparation
Papers 3 and 5 test practical skills. Even online, I prepare students thoroughly by working through past practical papers, teaching experimental design, data analysis, and evaluation techniques.

Learn more →What Makes Cambridge International Biology Challenging
Cambridge International Biology (9700) is a rigorous qualification recognised by top universities worldwide. It has a distinctive assessment structure with five papers and a strong emphasis on practical skills. Here is where most students struggle.
Paper 4: A2 Structured Questions (38% of A-Level)
Paper 4 is the highest-weighted paper and tests the full A2 content including a free-response essay question in Section B worth 15 marks. Students must demonstrate depth of knowledge, clear scientific writing, and the ability to construct extended arguments.
Paper 5: Planning, Analysis and Evaluation
This paper tests higher-order practical skills — planning experiments, analysing data, drawing conclusions, and evaluating methodology. Many students find this the most challenging paper because it requires application rather than recall.
Paper 3: Advanced Practical Skills
A hands-on practical exam lasting 2 hours. Students must carry out experiments, make accurate measurements, record and present data, and draw conclusions. Preparation requires understanding the principles behind practical work, not just following procedures.
Breadth of Content: 19 Topics
The 9700 syllabus covers 19 topics — 11 at AS Level and 8 more at A2. The sheer volume of content means students must be strategic about revision and confident across all topics.
Precision of Language
Cambridge examiners are known for rewarding precise scientific terminology. Vague or imprecise answers lose marks even when the student clearly understands the concept. I train students to write with the specificity that Cambridge examiners expect.
Understanding the Cambridge International Biology Exam Structure
Cambridge International AS and A Level Biology (9700) uses 5 papers. AS Level candidates take Papers 1, 2 and 3. A Level candidates take all 5 papers. Exams are available in the June and November series (and March for India).
AS Level Papers
Paper 1 — Multiple Choice (15% of A-Level)
Duration: 1 hour | Marks: 40 | Content: AS Level syllabus (Topics 1–11)
40 multiple-choice questions with four options each. Tests factual recall and the ability to apply knowledge quickly.
Paper 2 — AS Level Structured Questions (23% of A-Level)
Duration: 1 hour 15 minutes | Marks: 60 | Content: AS Level syllabus (Topics 1–11)
Structured questions requiring written answers. Tests knowledge, understanding, and the ability to handle and apply information.
Paper 3 — Advanced Practical Skills (12% of A-Level)
Duration: 2 hours | Marks: 40 | Content: Practical skills from AS Level syllabus
A hands-on practical examination. Students carry out experiments, record observations, present data, and draw conclusions.
A2 Level Papers (A Level only)
Paper 4 — A Level Structured Questions (38% of A-Level)
Duration: 2 hours | Marks: 100 | Content: A2 topics (may require AS knowledge)
Structured questions (Section A) plus a choice of one free-response essay question worth 15 marks (Section B). The highest-weighted paper.
Paper 5 — Planning, Analysis and Evaluation (12% of A-Level)
Duration: 1 hour 15 minutes | Marks: 30 | Content: Practical planning, data analysis, evaluation
Tests higher-order practical skills: designing experiments, analysing unfamiliar data, and evaluating methodology and conclusions.
