At least 10% of the marks in OCR Biology B – Advancing Biology (H022/H422) come from mathematical skills, and these are the questions students drop most often – not because the biology is hard, but because the method is never shown in full. Mark schemes give the answer and a couple of terse marking points; they rarely show you how to get there. This pack closes that gap.

Every calculation question from the OCR Biology B – Advancing Biology (H022/H422) past papers is worked through as a teaching script: the reasoning, the units, the rounding, and the exact point at which each mark is earned. It covers the full spread of the board’s examinable maths – magnification and scale bars, percentage change, rates, log scales, the t-test, the chi-squared test and Spearman’s rank, Hardy-Weinberg and Simpson’s index of diversity.

A worked solution, in full

Here is the kind of question students most often lose marks on, worked exactly as it appears in the pack.

Q. A structure measures 45 mm on a micrograph taken at a magnification of ×15 000. Calculate its actual size in micrometres. (2 marks)

Convert the image size to the same units: 45 mm = 45 000 µm.
Rearrange magnification = image ÷ actual, so actual = image ÷ magnification = 45 000 µm ÷ 15 000.
Divide: 45 000 ÷ 15 000 = 3.
Answer: 3 µm.

Examiner note: mark 1 is the unit conversion, mark 2 the value. Forgetting to convert mm to µm is the single most common slip – the pack shows the conversion every time.

How to use it

Work each past-paper calculation yourself first, then check your method – not just your answer – against the worked script. Because every step is shown, you can see precisely where a method broke down: a missed unit conversion, the wrong denominator in a percentage change, or the wrong statistical test for the data. The same handful of maths skills recur across the papers, so a few focused hours removes a predictable, repeated source of lost marks before the exam.

Who it’s for

OCR Biology B – Advancing Biology (H022/H422) students in Year 12 and Year 13, and tutors or teachers who want ready-made, mark-scheme-accurate model solutions to teach or set from. It pairs naturally with the matching free maths skills page, linked below, which explains each technique before you drill it on the papers here.

Written by a subject specialist. Every pack is produced by Tyrone John – a Chartered Biologist (CBiol MRSB) with 25+ years teaching A-Level Biology exclusively, and a former A-Level examiner – so you’re learning exactly what earns the marks.

Frequently asked questions

Which specification and papers does this cover?
It covers the calculation questions across the OCR Biology B – Advancing Biology (H022/H422) past papers.
Is this just the answers, or the full method?
The full method – every question is a teaching script showing the reasoning, units, rounding and where each mark is awarded, not simply the final figure.
What format is it and how do I get it?
A PDF download, delivered instantly after checkout. Print it or use it on screen on any device.
Will this help with the statistics questions?
Yes. A common reason for lost marks is choosing the wrong test or misreading the critical value. The pack shows how to select the correct test for the data and how to word a valid conclusion.
