Tyrone

A-Level Biology Tutor & Former Edexcel Examiner

I have been teaching A-Level Biology for over 25 years, and I am a former Edexcel examiner. I have marked thousands of Edexcel Biology papers, which means I know exactly what the mark schemes reward, the common mistakes students make, and the precise language needed to earn full marks. This is not something you can learn from a textbook — it comes from the experience of sitting in an examiner’s chair and making marking decisions. I taught A-Level Biology full-time at Gower College Swansea before moving to full-time private tuition in 2022.

How I Help Edexcel Biology Students

Every student is different, so every tutoring programme is personalised. But my approach always combines deep content knowledge with practical exam technique training — and as a former Edexcel examiner, I bring a unique perspective that most tutors simply cannot offer.

Examiner-Led Teaching

As a former Edexcel examiner, I teach you exactly what the mark schemes reward. You will learn the specific phrases, structures, and approaches that I know from first-hand experience earn full marks.

Specification-Focused Teaching

I teach specifically to the Edexcel Biology A (9BN0) specification. Every concept, example, and practice question is directly relevant to your exams. If you are studying Edexcel Biology B (9BI0), please visit my dedicated page.

Past Paper Practice

We work through real Edexcel past papers together, with detailed feedback using actual mark schemes. I explain not just what the correct answer is, but why other answers lose marks.

Pre-Release Article Preparation

Paper 3 includes questions based on a pre-release scientific article. I help you analyse the article, identify the key biological concepts, and practise the question types that come up.

Every session includes: past papers, detailed topic notes, a video recording of the lesson, and full access to the student portal with digital resources.

Tuition Options

One-to-One Tuition

Individual sessions typically lasting one hour, tailored entirely to your needs. Ideal for focused, personalised attention on the Edexcel topics and exam techniques that matter most to you.

What Makes Edexcel A-Level Biology Challenging

The Edexcel Biology A (Salters-Nuffield) specification presents unique challenges that require specialist support. With its context-led approach, emphasis on practical skills, mathematical content, and the synoptic Paper 3 with its pre-release article, many students find it particularly demanding.

Students often tell me they understand the biology but struggle to translate that understanding into marks. As a former Edexcel examiner, I have seen this from both sides — and I know exactly where marks are lost and how to fix it.

Key point: Edexcel Biology requires 10% mathematical skills at Level 2 or above — the highest maths content of any biology specification. Many students underestimate this. I make sure my students are confident with the calculations, statistical tests, and data analysis that Edexcel demands.

Common Struggles I Help Edexcel Students Overcome

1

Paper 3: Synoptic Questions & Pre-Release Article

Paper 3 draws on content from across the entire specification and includes questions based on a pre-release scientific article. Many students struggle to make connections between topics and to apply their knowledge to the unfamiliar context of the article.

2

Mathematical Skills (10% of the Exam)

Edexcel has the highest maths content requirement. Students must be confident with statistical tests (chi-squared, Spearman’s rank, Student’s t-test), logarithms, standard deviation, and calculations involving concentrations, dilutions, and magnification.

3

Core Practicals

Edexcel Biology A has 16 core practicals that are assessed in the written exams. Understanding the principles behind each practical — not just memorising the method — is essential for full marks.

4

Extended Response Questions (up to 9 marks)

Knowing how to structure longer answers, which key terms to include, and how to present a logical argument is essential. I teach the specific techniques that examiners reward.

5

Data Analysis and Experimental Design

Edexcel frequently presents unfamiliar experiments and asks you to interpret results, evaluate methods, or suggest improvements. I teach you a systematic approach to these questions.

Understanding the Edexcel A-Level Biology Exam Structure

Edexcel Biology A (Salters-Nuffield, 9BN0) is a linear qualification — all three papers are sat at the end of Year 13, typically in June. There is also a separate Practical Endorsement. Edexcel also offers a separate Biology B (9BI0) specification with a different structure.

Biology A (Salters-Nuffield) — 9BN0

Paper 1 — The Natural Environment and Species Survival (33.3%)

Duration: 1 hour 45 minutes  |  Marks: 100  |  Topics: 1–6

Covers lifestyle, transport, genes, health, development, plants, the environment, and the natural environment. Includes multiple choice, short answer, and extended response questions up to 9 marks.

Paper 2 — Energy, Exercise and Coordination (33.3%)

Duration: 1 hour 45 minutes  |  Marks: 100  |  Topics: 1–4 and 7–8

Covers energy, exercise, coordination, muscles, the brain, and behaviour. Same question format as Paper 1.

Paper 3 — General and Practical Applications in Biology (33.3%)

Duration: 2 hours 30 minutes  |  Marks: 120  |  Topics: All (1–10)

This is the synoptic paper. It draws on content from across the entire specification and includes questions on core practical techniques. A section is based on a pre-release scientific article that students receive in advance.

Important: At least 15% of the overall Edexcel A-Level Biology assessment tests practical skills. 10% requires mathematical skills at Level 2 or above. Paper 3 alone is worth a third of the entire A-Level. I make sure my students are fully prepared for all three papers.

For the full specification, visit the official Edexcel Biology A (9BN0) specification page.
