My approach to Biology B tuition combines my examining experience with deep understanding of the concept-led specification. Every session is tailored to your specific needs.
Examiner-Led Teaching
As a former Edexcel examiner, I teach you exactly what the mark schemes reward. I know the specific language, level of detail, and answer structures that examiners expect.
Synoptic Paper 3 Preparation
Paper 3 is worth 40% of your A-Level and tests all 10 topics synoptically. I build connections between topics from the very first session, so Paper 3 preparation happens naturally throughout the course.
Past Paper Practice
We work through real Biology B past papers together, with detailed feedback using actual mark schemes. I explain not just what the correct answer is, but why other answers lose marks.
Core Practical Mastery
Biology B has core practicals that are assessed in the written exams. I make sure you understand the principles, methods, and data analysis behind each one — not just memorise the procedures.
Tuition Options
One-to-One Tuition
Individual sessions typically lasting one hour, tailored entirely to your needs. Ideal for focused, personalised attention on the Biology B topics and exam techniques that matter most to you.

Study alongside 2–8 other students. A cost-effective option if you enjoy collaborative learning and benefit from hearing different questions and perspectives.
Learn more →What Makes Edexcel Biology B Challenging
Edexcel Biology B (9BI0) follows a concept-led approach, building biological understanding in a logical sequence from molecules to ecosystems. While the content overlaps with Biology A, the way it is structured, taught, and examined differs significantly. Here is where most Biology B students struggle.
Paper 3: The 40% Synoptic Challenge
Paper 3 carries 40% of the total marks and draws on all 10 topics. Students must make connections across the entire specification — from molecular biology to ecosystems. This requires a depth of understanding that goes well beyond topic-by-topic revision.
Extended Writing and Scientific Argument
Biology B papers require clear, structured extended writing. Many students can recall the facts but struggle to construct a coherent scientific argument that earns full marks. As a former examiner, I teach you how to structure these responses.
Energy for Biological Processes (Topic 5)
Photosynthesis and respiration at the biochemical level — light-dependent reactions, Calvin cycle, glycolysis, Krebs cycle, and oxidative phosphorylation. This is the most demanding content and a common area of weakness.
Core Practicals in Written Exams
Practical skills are assessed in the written papers. Students need to understand experimental design, variables, data analysis, and evaluation — not just recall what they did in the lab.
Mathematical Skills (10% Minimum)
At least 10% of marks across all three papers require Level 2 mathematics. Statistical tests, rates of reaction, magnification calculations, and data interpretation are commonly tested.
Understanding the Edexcel Biology B Exam Structure
Edexcel Biology B (9BI0) is a linear qualification — all three papers are sat at the end of Year 13, typically in June. There is also a separate Science Practical Endorsement.
Paper 1 — Advanced Biochemistry, Microbiology and Genetics (30%)
Duration: 1 hour 45 minutes | Marks: 90 | Code: 9BI0/01
Covers Topics 1–7: Biological Molecules, Cells/Viruses/Reproduction, Classification and Biodiversity, Exchange and Transport, Energy for Biological Processes, Microbiology and Pathogens, and Modern Genetics.
Paper 2 — Advanced Physiology, Evolution and Ecology (30%)
Duration: 1 hour 45 minutes | Marks: 90 | Code: 9BI0/02
Covers Topics 1–4 plus Topics 8–10: includes core content from Year 1 alongside Origins of Genetic Variation, Control Systems, and Ecosystems.
Paper 3 — General and Practical Principles in Biology (40%)
Duration: 2 hours 30 minutes | Marks: 120 | Code: 9BI0/03
Covers all Topics 1–10 synoptically. Includes extended writing, synoptic questions drawing on multiple topics, and questions testing conceptual understanding of experimental methods. This is the highest-weighted paper and the one most students find hardest.
Science Practical Endorsement (Reported Separately)
Internally assessed and externally monitored by Pearson. Reported as Pass or Not Classified. Does not contribute to the A-Level grade but is required by many universities.

What Is the Difference Between Edexcel Biology A and Biology B?
Edexcel offers two A-Level Biology specifications. Understanding the difference helps you know which page is right for you:
Biology A — Salters-Nuffield (9BN0)
Context-led approach. Topics are taught through real-life biological contexts and applications. Includes a pre-release scientific article for Paper 3. 16 core practicals.
Visit my Biology A page →Biology B (9BI0) — This Page
Concept-led approach. Topics are taught in a logical sequence building from molecules to ecosystems. Paper 3 is synoptic across all topics. Core practicals assessed in written exams.
Edexcel Biology B Topics I Cover
I cover every topic in the Edexcel Biology B (9BI0) specification, tailoring each session to the areas where you need the most help:
Biological Molecules
Carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, nucleic acids, water, and inorganic ions. The foundation of the entire specification — strong understanding here is essential for all three papers.
Cells, Viruses and Reproduction of Living Things
Cell structure, viruses, cell division (mitosis and meiosis), sexual reproduction in mammals, and reproduction in plants.
Classification and Biodiversity
Classification systems, biodiversity, evolution, natural selection, and conservation. Frequently appears as synoptic content in Paper 3.
Exchange and Transport
Surface area to volume ratio, gas exchange, cell transport mechanisms, circulation, transport in plants, and adaptations for nutrition.
Energy for Biological Processes
Photosynthesis (light-dependent and light-independent reactions), respiration (glycolysis, Krebs cycle, oxidative phosphorylation), and ATP. The most biochemically demanding topic.
Microbiology and Pathogens
Microbial techniques, bacteria, fungi, infection and response, immunology, and antibiotics. Includes important core practicals.
Modern Genetics
Gene expression, gene technology, recombinant DNA, genome sequencing, and the ethical implications of genetic technologies.
Origins of Genetic Variation
Mutations, meiosis and genetic variation, genetics and inheritance, gene pools, and the Hardy-Weinberg principle.
Control Systems
Chemical control in plants, the nervous system, the brain, detection of light, homeostasis, the kidney, osmoregulation, and thermoregulation.
Ecosystems
Ecosystems, energy flow, nutrient cycling, succession, and human effects on ecosystems including climate change.
I Also Cover Other Exam Boards
Studying a different specification? I cover all major UK and international A-Level Biology exam boards:

Yes, I am a former Edexcel examiner. I have marked A-Level Biology papers for Edexcel and also for WJEC/Eduqas. This examining experience across multiple boards gives me unique insight into how marks are awarded and what examiners expect.
Biology A (Salters-Nuffield, 9BN0) is context-led — topics are taught through real-life applications. Biology B (9BI0) is concept-led — topics are taught in a logical sequence from molecules to ecosystems. Both are linear with 3 papers, but they differ in structure and emphasis. If you are studying Biology A, please visit my Edexcel Biology A tutor page.
Paper 3 is worth 40% of the A-Level and draws on all 10 topics synoptically. I build connections between topics from the very first session, using cross-topic questions and structured essay practice. By the time Paper 3 arrives, my students are confident linking ideas across the full specification.
Absolutely. Biology B core practicals are assessed in the written exams. I make sure my students understand the principles, methods, variables, and data analysis behind each core practical — not just memorise what they did in the lab.
I have a 100% grade improvement rate across all exam boards. My students consistently achieve grades above their predicted results. You can read testimonials on my testimonials page.
One-to-one tuition is £80 per hour Monday to Friday and £120 per hour at weekends. Small group tuition is £50 per hour per student Monday to Friday and £80 per hour at weekends, with a minimum of 4 students per group. Please see my charges page for full details.
