Former WJEC/Eduqas Examiner — Marked thousands of Biology papers
Former Edexcel Examiner — Also examined for Edexcel
18 Years at Gower College Swansea — Full-time Biology teaching
BSc Immunology — King’s College London
Research Degree in Molecular Pharmacology — Newcastle University
PGCE Teaching Qualification — University of Wales
Chartered Biologist (CBiol) — Royal Society of Biology

Why my examining experience helps IB students: The analytical and evaluative skills required in IB Biology — data-based questions, extended responses, and the Scientific Investigation — overlap significantly with A-Level examining standards. Having marked thousands of A-Level papers, I understand exactly how examiners assess structured answers, evaluate scientific reasoning, and allocate marks for precision of language.

How I Help IB Biology Students

IB Biology has a concept-driven, inquiry-based approach that requires strong analytical skills alongside solid subject knowledge. I tailor my teaching to address the specific demands of the IB Diploma Programme.

Data-Based Question Mastery

Both Paper 1B and Paper 2A test your ability to analyse experimental data you have never seen before. I train you to read graphs, interpret data tables, identify trends, evaluate experimental design, and write concise answers that earn full marks.

Extended Response Writing

Paper 2B requires well-structured extended responses that demonstrate holistic understanding across the syllabus. I teach you how to plan, structure, and write essays that link concepts across themes — exactly what IB examiners reward with top marks.

Scientific Investigation (IA) Support

The IA is worth 20% of your final grade. I guide you through choosing a research question, designing a valid method, analysing data effectively, and writing a strong conclusion and evaluation — the four criteria that determine your IA score.

Concept-Based Understanding

The new IB Biology syllabus emphasises understanding concepts across themes rather than memorising isolated facts. I help you build the interconnected understanding that allows you to apply your knowledge in unfamiliar contexts — the key to achieving a 6 or 7.

Every session includes: past paper practice, detailed topic notes, a video recording of the lesson, and full access to the student portal with digital resources.

Understanding the New IB Biology Exam Structure (2025 Syllabus)

The IB Biology syllabus was substantially revised for first assessment in May 2025. The old option topics and Paper 3 have been removed.

Standard Level (SL) — External Assessment (80%)

Paper 1 — Multiple Choice & Data-Based Questions (36%)

Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes | Marks: 55

Paper 1A contains multiple-choice questions on SL syllabus content. Paper 1B contains four data-based questions related to experimental work. Both parts completed together without interruption. Calculators are permitted.

Paper 2 — Short Answer & Extended Response (44%)

Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes | Marks: 50

Paper 2A contains data-based questions from unfamiliar contexts and short-answer questions. Paper 2B contains extended-response questions that test holistic understanding across the syllabus.

Higher Level (HL) — External Assessment (80%)

Paper 1 — Multiple Choice & Data-Based Questions (36%)

Duration: 2 hours | Marks: 70

Same format as SL but with more questions and additional HL content. Paper 1A has more MCQs than SL. Paper 1B contains data-based questions. Both parts completed together. Calculators permitted.

Paper 2 — Short Answer & Extended Response (44%)

Duration: 2 hours 30 minutes | Marks: 80

Paper 2A contains data-based and short-answer questions on SL and Additional Higher Level (AHL) material. Paper 2B requires you to answer two of three extended-response questions covering both SL and AHL content.

Scientific Investigation — Internal Assessment (20%)

Marks: 24 (4 criteria x 6 marks each) | Word limit: 3,000 words

An independent research project assessed on four equally weighted criteria: Research Design, Data Analysis, Conclusion, and Evaluation. Students can collaborate on planning in groups of up to three, but each must have their own unique research question.

Key change from the old syllabus: Paper 3 and the option topics have been removed. Some option content has been incorporated into the core themes. Students now sit only two external papers plus the Scientific Investigation. The total exam time remains the same — redistributed across fewer, longer papers.

IB Biology Themes and Topics I Cover

The new IB Biology syllabus is built around 4 overarching themes, each with 2 concepts, studied across 4 levels of biological organisation (Molecules, Cells, Organisms, Ecosystems). I cover the full 40 topics.

Theme A — Unity and Diversity

Explores how living organisms share common features yet display enormous diversity. Covers cell biology, classification, evolution, and biodiversity.

Theme B — Form and Function

Examines the relationship between biological structures and their functions. Covers biological molecules, membrane structure, organ systems, and gas exchange.

Theme C — Interaction and Interdependence

Studies how biological systems interact at all levels. Covers enzymes, cell signalling, the immune system, neural and hormonal communication, and ecological relationships.

Theme D — Continuity and Change

Focuses on how life continues and changes over time. Covers DNA replication, cell division, genetics, inheritance, gene expression, evolution, and natural selection.

HL students: You study the same four themes as SL but with Additional Higher Level (AHL) content adding depth and complexity. This includes advanced enzyme inhibition, complex inheritance patterns, chi-squared tests, detailed photosynthesis and respiration pathways, and neural communication. I cover all AHL content thoroughly.

IB Biology HL vs SL — Key Differences

Standard Level (SL)

150 teaching hours. Covers core content across all 4 themes. Paper 1: 1hr 30min (55 marks). Paper 2: 1hr 30min (50 marks). Builds a strong foundation in biology. Suitable if Biology is not your primary university subject but you need a science in your IB Diploma.

Higher Level (HL)

240 teaching hours. Core content plus Additional Higher Level (AHL) topics. Paper 1: 2hr (70 marks). Paper 2: 2hr 30min (80 marks). Includes advanced data analysis and cross-topic extended responses. Required or recommended for university courses in medicine, biological sciences, and related fields.

Both levels: The Scientific Investigation (IA) is worth 20% and uses the same assessment criteria at both SL and HL. However, HL students are expected to demonstrate a deeper understanding of biological concepts.

Frequently Asked Questions About IB Biology Tuition

Yes. I tutor IB Biology at both Higher Level (HL) and Standard Level (SL) alongside all UK A-Level Biology exam boards. My deep understanding of biology across multiple specifications means I can help IB students with the concept-driven approach, data-based questions, extended responses, and the Scientific Investigation (IA).

I teach the current IB Biology syllabus — first assessment May 2025. This is the new concept-driven curriculum built around four themes (Unity and Diversity, Form and Function, Interaction and Interdependence, Continuity and Change) with 40 topics across four levels of biological organisation. The old option topics and Paper 3 have been removed.

IB Biology now has two exam papers plus the Scientific Investigation (IA). Paper 1 has two parts: Paper 1A (multiple-choice) and Paper 1B (data-based questions), completed together. Paper 2 has two parts: Paper 2A (data-based and short-answer) and Paper 2B (extended-response). The IA is worth 20% of the final grade.

Yes. I help students plan, structure, and refine their Scientific Investigation (IA). The IA is assessed on four equally weighted criteria — Research Design, Data Analysis, Conclusion, and Evaluation — each worth 6 marks for a total of 24. I guide you through choosing a strong research question, designing a valid method, analysing data, and writing a rigorous conclusion and evaluation.

Both levels share the same four themes and core content, but HL adds Additional Higher Level (AHL) topics providing greater depth. HL has 240 teaching hours compared to 150 for SL. HL exams are longer — Paper 1 is 2 hours (vs 1.5 for SL) and Paper 2 is 2 hours 30 minutes (vs 1.5 hours for SL).

One-to-one tuition is £80 per hour Monday to Friday and £120 per hour at weekends. Small group tuition is £50 per hour per student Monday to Friday and £80 per hour at weekends. Please see my charges page for full details.
