Online Biology Tuition That Works — Not a Compromise

Some parents still wonder whether online tuition can match the quality of sitting in the same room as a tutor. I understand that concern. But here is the reality: every student I have worked with has improved their grade, and the vast majority of them have been taught entirely online. My 100% grade improvement rate has been built through online delivery, not in spite of it.

I have been delivering A-Level Biology tuition online since 2015 — years before most of the tutoring industry moved online. By the time other tutors were scrambling to set up Zoom accounts, I already had a professional studio, established workflows, and years of experience knowing exactly how to teach effectively through a screen. That decade of online teaching expertise matters.

Online tuition is not a poor substitute for in-person teaching. In several important ways, it is better. Every session is recorded so students can rewatch explanations during revision — something you simply cannot do with an in-person tutor. There is no wasted travel time, no cancellations because of weather, and students get access to the best specialist tutor for their subject regardless of where they live. A student in rural Devon gets exactly the same session quality as someone in central London.

The key difference: I teach from a purpose-built online teaching studio — not a laptop on a kitchen table. Triple monitors, a professional microphone, a large graphics tablet, and a custom-built PC ensure that every session is delivered at broadcast quality. The next section explains exactly what that looks like.

My Professional Online Teaching Studio

I have invested heavily in my online teaching setup because I believe students deserve the same quality of experience they would get in the best-equipped classroom. Here is what I use in every session:

🖥️ Triple-Monitor Workstation

A Sony 4K primary display flanked by two additional monitors. One screen shows the shared teaching workspace that the student sees. The second holds my lesson notes, mark schemes, and resources. The third gives me a view of the student’s video feed and session controls. This means I never need to interrupt the lesson to search for a file or switch windows — everything is at hand instantly.

✏️ Large Huion Graphics Tablet

A 38cm Huion professional graphics tablet — one of the largest available. I use this to draw biological diagrams, annotate past papers, work through mark schemes, and write explanations in real time, just as I would on a whiteboard in a classroom. The large surface area means diagrams are clear, detailed, and easy for students to follow. This is how I teach topics like respiration pathways, cell division, and protein synthesis with the same level of detail as a classroom whiteboard.

🎙️ Professional Audio

A Blue professional microphone and JuiceBoom Pro speaker system deliver crystal-clear audio in both directions. Students can hear every word clearly, and I can hear their questions without asking them to repeat themselves. Poor audio is one of the biggest reasons online lessons feel frustrating — my setup eliminates that problem entirely.

📷 HD Video

I use an iPhone as a high-definition webcam via Apple’s Continuity Camera feature, which provides significantly better video quality than a standard built-in webcam. Students see a sharp, well-lit image — not a grainy, poorly-framed picture. During sessions, I can also point the camera at physical resources, printed diagrams, or models when it is helpful to show something in three dimensions.

💻 Custom-Built PC

A custom-built professional workstation from Power Computing, purpose-specced for multi-tasking during live teaching. Intel Core i5-14600K processor (14 cores, up to 5.3GHz), 32GB DDR5 RAM, NVIDIA RTX 5060 graphics, and a 1TB NVMe solid-state drive with read speeds of 7,250 MB/s. This means zero lag, zero freezing, and instant access to any file during a session.

🌐 1Gb Internet Connection

1 Gigabit per second upload and download speeds. Most home broadband connections offer 30–70Mbps — mine is more than ten times faster. This ensures a smooth, buffer-free experience regardless of how much content we are sharing on screen. No frozen video, no dropped audio, no connection warnings in the middle of explaining the Krebs cycle.

The Software Behind Every Session

Professional hardware is only half the picture. I use a carefully chosen set of software tools to make every session as interactive and productive as possible:

Zoom

The core platform for live sessions. Zoom’s shared whiteboard, screen sharing, and recording features are the backbone of every lesson. Students receive a recording of every session they can rewatch at any time.

PDF Annotator

This is how we work through past papers together in real time. I load the exam paper on screen and annotate it live using the graphics tablet — circling key terms, highlighting mark scheme points, and writing model answers while the student watches and contributes.

Microsoft Office

PowerPoint for structured topic presentations, Word for detailed notes, and Excel for data analysis exercises. All materials are tailored to the student’s exam board and uploaded to their personal student portal after the session.

Adobe Creative Suite

Used for creating high-quality revision resources, annotated diagrams, and visual learning materials. Clear, professional-quality graphics make complex biological processes easier to understand than hand-drawn diagrams ever could.

“Tyrone is one of the best tutors I have ever had! He always explains topics in a clear manner and repeats concepts again to embed the understanding of the content. He uploads the session notes on the student portal which is an easy website to navigate. The student portal contains a vast array of resources such as topic notes, past paper questions, questions by topic, revision notes and student activity workbooks. I would definitely recommend Tyrone as a Biology Tutor.”

— Elias, A-Level Biology Student

“Tyrone has been really good for my son. He has been tutoring my son since the start of the A-Level course as I thought my son would struggle as he is not the most academic of students. He has really blossomed under Tyrone’s tutorage and has become much more confident in the subject. My son achieved a high B in his Biology AS level in November which is carried over to his A-Level — I think it stunned his teachers as they had him pegged at a C/D. Tyrone is knowledgeable, explains things clearly and takes his time to ensure that the student understands the topic. He is patient and supportive and has encouraged my son to do his best. I could not have asked for more and I would definitely recommend him.”

— Penny Haynes, Parent (Cambridge International Board)

“My daughter has been having biology tutoring with Tyrone throughout Year 13 and is finding it hugely beneficial. The way he tailors the content to what she needs to cover is really important, the fact that Tyrone goes at her pace is so helpful and — in her words — ‘he’s just much better than my teachers’. From a parent perspective Tyrone is reliable, booking and paying is easy and I can see that my daughter is more engaged in a topic that she does find tricky. I would recommend Tyrone without hesitation.”

How an Online Biology Session Works

1

Free 20-Minute Consultation

We start with a free video call to discuss the student’s exam board, current grade, target grade, and specific areas they are struggling with. This also lets you experience the quality of the online connection before committing.

2

Personalised Learning Plan

Based on the consultation, I build a targeted plan focusing on the student’s weak areas and exam board requirements. No generic worksheets — everything is tailored to what this student needs to improve.

3

Live Interactive Sessions via Zoom

We connect on Zoom with a shared whiteboard. I teach using the graphics tablet, annotate past papers in real time, and work through exam questions together. Students can ask questions, draw diagrams, and interact just as they would in a classroom.

4

Recorded Sessions & Student Portal

Every session is recorded and made available to rewatch. I also upload topic notes, past paper questions by topic, revision notes, and activity workbooks to the student’s personal portal — all specific to their exam board.

Students Across the UK and Internationally

Online tuition removes geography as a barrier entirely. I currently teach students from across the United Kingdom and from seven countries internationally:

🇬🇧 United Kingdom 🇰🇼 Kuwait 🇫🇷 France 🇨🇭 Switzerland 🇬🇮 Gibraltar 🇦🇪 UAE 🇸🇦 Saudi Arabia 🇭🇰 Hong Kong

International students typically follow the Cambridge International (CIE 9700) or IB Biology syllabuses, though some British schools abroad use AQA, Edexcel, or OCR. I cover all of these and adjust session times to work across time zones.

No matter where you are: Whether you live in a major UK city with plenty of tutor options, a rural area with none, or another country entirely — you get the same expert tuition from my purpose-built studio. The quality of the teaching does not change based on your postcode.

Every UK Exam Board Covered

One of the biggest advantages of choosing a specialist online tutor is that you are not limited by which exam boards a local tutor happens to know. I have direct teaching or examining experience across all major UK exam boards:

1

AQA — 5 Years Teaching Full-Time

The most widely used exam board nationally (~55% of entries). I taught AQA A-Level Biology full-time for 5 years at Gower College Swansea, so I know the specification, the 25-mark essay, and the required practicals thoroughly.

2

Edexcel A & B — Former Examiner

As a former Edexcel examiner, I have marked thousands of scripts and know exactly where students gain and lose marks. This gives my Edexcel students a genuine advantage in understanding what the examiners expect.

3

WJEC & Eduqas — 13 Years & Former Examiner

I taught WJEC Biology for 13 years at Gower College and I am a former WJEC/Eduqas examiner. WJEC is the standard in Wales; Eduqas is the version used by some schools in England. I cover both comprehensively.

4

OCR A, OCR B, IB & Cambridge International

I also cover OCR A (the traditional specification), OCR B (Advancing Biology), IB Biology (including Internal Assessment and extended essay), and Cambridge International (CIE 9700) for students at international schools.

Yes — and in several ways it is more effective. I use a purpose-built online teaching studio with a triple-monitor setup, a large Huion graphics tablet for drawing biological diagrams in real time, a professional Blue microphone for crystal-clear audio, and a 1Gb internet connection for reliable, lag-free sessions.

We work on a shared interactive whiteboard with screen sharing, so we can annotate past papers and diagrams together just as naturally as sitting side by side. Every session is recorded so students can rewatch explanations during revision — something in-person tuition cannot offer. I have been delivering online tuition since 2015 — a decade of experience that most tutors simply cannot match. My 100% grade improvement rate is built entirely on online delivery.

At minimum, a relevant degree. Ideally a PGCE or other teaching qualification, which confirms they have been trained to teach rather than just knowing the subject. Examiner experience is a major advantage because it means the tutor understands how papers are marked from the inside. Chartered status with a professional body shows ongoing professional recognition.

I hold a PGCE from the University of Wales, Chartered Biologist status (CBiol) with the Royal Society of Biology, and I am a former examiner for both WJEC/Eduqas and Edexcel. My academic background includes a BSc in Immunology from King’s College London and a research degree in Molecular Pharmacology from Newcastle University. I have over 25 years of A-Level teaching experience. You can read more on my about page.

Yes. I offer a free 20-minute video consultation where we can discuss the student’s current grade, target grade, exam board, and any specific areas they are struggling with. There is no obligation to book after the consultation — it is also a chance to experience the quality of the online setup first-hand. You can book a consultation here.

All major UK and international exam boards: AQA, Edexcel A (Salters-Nuffield), Edexcel B, OCR A, OCR B (Advancing Biology), WJEC, Eduqas, Cambridge International (CIE 9700), and IB Biology.

I have taught AQA full-time for five years, and I am a former examiner for both WJEC/Eduqas and Edexcel. Every session is tailored to the student’s specific exam board and specification.

Yes. Because all my tuition is delivered online, I work with students across the world. I currently have students in Kuwait, France, Switzerland, Gibraltar, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Hong Kong. Online sessions work well across different time zones, and I cover international syllabuses including Cambridge International (CIE 9700) and IB Biology alongside all UK exam boards.

Every student gets access to a dedicated online portal containing topic notes, past paper questions organised by topic, revision notes, student activity workbooks, and recorded session videos they can rewatch at any time. The portal is tailored to their exam board so everything is relevant to their specific specification.

Students find the recorded sessions especially useful close to exams because they can revisit tricky explanations as many times as they need. You can find out more on the resources page.
