Tyrone

A-Level Biology Tutor, Former WJEC Examiner & Former Gower College Teacher

WJEC is the exam board I know best — and I know it from every angle. I am a former WJEC/Eduqas examiner who has marked thousands of WJEC Biology papers. I taught A-Level Biology at Gower College Swansea for 18 years, including over 13 years delivering the WJEC specification in the classroom. I also tutored WJEC students privately throughout my time at Gower College, giving me well over 15 years of total WJEC experience. This combination of examining, classroom teaching, and private tutoring means I understand the WJEC specification at a depth that very few tutors can match. I know exactly how the mark schemes are applied, where students lose marks most often, and the specific techniques that turn a good answer into a full-mark answer.

How I Help WJEC Biology Students

My approach to WJEC Biology tuition is built on first-hand experience — both as an examiner and as a teacher who delivered this specification every day at Gower College. Every session is tailored to your specific needs, but the foundation is always the same: deep knowledge of the WJEC specification and mark schemes.

Examiner-Led Teaching

As a former WJEC examiner, I teach you exactly what the mark schemes reward. I have marked thousands of papers and I know the specific language, structure, and level of detail that examiners expect. This is insight you cannot get from any textbook.

QER Answer Coaching

Quality of Extended Response questions are where most WJEC students lose marks unnecessarily. I teach you a clear, proven structure for QER answers that consistently earns top-band marks — because I know exactly how these answers are assessed. Read my free WJEC/Eduqas QER Student Guide to get started.

Past Paper Practice

We work through real WJEC past papers together, with detailed feedback using actual mark schemes. I explain not just what the correct answer is, but why other answers lose marks — and how to avoid those same mistakes.

Unit 5 Practical Preparation

The WJEC practical examination (Unit 5) is unique to this specification. I prepare my students thoroughly for experimental design, data analysis, and the written communication required under timed conditions.

Every session includes: past papers, detailed topic notes, a video recording of the lesson, and full access to the student portal with digital resources.

What Makes WJEC A-Level Biology Challenging

The WJEC specification is the primary A-Level Biology course for students in Wales. Having taught it full-time and examined for WJEC, I know exactly where students struggle — and more importantly, I know how to fix those struggles quickly and effectively.

Common Struggles I Help WJEC Students Overcome

1

QER (Quality of Extended Response) Questions

WJEC uses banded marking for extended responses. Your answer is assessed holistically against level descriptors, not point-by-point. Most students do not understand how this works — as a former examiner, I do. I teach you the exact structure and language that hits the top band every time. For a detailed breakdown of how QER questions work and how to answer them, read my free QER Student Guide.

2

Unit 5: The Practical Examination

Unique to WJEC, this timed practical exam tests experimental design, data collection, analysis, and evaluation. Many students underestimate this paper. I prepare my students to approach it with confidence and a clear strategy.

3

Unit 4: Variation, Inheritance and Options

The genetics and inheritance content in Unit 4 is challenging, and students must also study an option topic. I help students navigate both the compulsory content and the option, ensuring they are fully prepared for this demanding paper.

4

Biochemistry: Photosynthesis and Respiration

The detailed biochemistry of the light-dependent reactions, Calvin cycle, glycolysis, and Krebs cycle trips up many students. I break these processes down into clear, manageable steps and link them to the specific exam questions WJEC asks.

5

Mathematical Skills and Data Analysis

WJEC requires a minimum of 10% mathematical skills across the papers. Students need confidence with statistical tests, calculations, and data interpretation. I build these skills alongside the biology content.

Understanding the WJEC A-Level Biology Exam Structure

WJEC A-Level Biology (1400) consists of 5 units. Units 1 and 2 form the AS qualification, while Units 3, 4 and 5 form the A2. Unlike most other exam boards, WJEC includes a practical examination (Unit 5) as a separate assessed component.

AS Level (Year 12)

Unit 1 — Basic Biochemistry and Cell Organisation (20% of A-Level)

Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes  |  Marks: 80  |  Code: 2400U10

Covers biological molecules, cell structure, cell membranes, enzymes, nucleic acids, and cell division. A mix of short and structured questions plus QER.

Unit 2 — Biodiversity and Physiology of Body Systems (20% of A-Level)

Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes  |  Marks: 80  |  Code: 2400U20

Covers classification, biodiversity, adaptations for gas exchange, transport in animals and plants, and adaptations for nutrition. Includes QER questions.

A2 Level (Year 13)

Unit 3 — Energy, Homeostasis and the Environment (25% of A-Level)

Duration: 2 hours  |  Marks: 90  |  Code: 1400U30

Covers photosynthesis, respiration, microbiology, populations, ecosystems, homeostasis, and the kidney. This unit contains the most demanding biochemistry content.

Unit 4 — Variation, Inheritance and Options (25% of A-Level)

Duration: 2 hours  |  Marks: 90  |  Code: 1400U40

Covers sexual reproduction, genetics, inheritance, variation, evolution, and an option topic. Includes challenging genetics problems and data analysis.

Unit 5 — Practical Examination (10% of A-Level)

Duration: Timed practical  |  Marks: 50  |  Code: 1400U50

A practical examination unique to WJEC. Tests experimental design, data collection, analysis, and evaluation under timed conditions. This is not a write-up — it is a hands-on practical exam.

Important: Unlike other exam boards where practicals are assessed through written papers or endorsement, WJEC has a dedicated practical examination worth 10% of the total A-Level. This makes the WJEC assessment structure unique in the UK. As someone who taught this specification at Gower College, I know exactly how to prepare students for every unit.

WJEC A-Level Biology Topics I Cover

I cover every topic across all 5 units of the WJEC specification. Having taught this specification full-time at Gower College, I know which topics students find hardest and where the most marks are available:

AS Topics (Units 1 & 2)

1

Carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, nucleic acids, and water. The foundation of everything that follows — getting this right in Year 12 is critical for A2 success. See my Unit 1 revision guide and paper analysis for detailed support on this topic.

2

Cell Structure and Organisation

Eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells, organelles, microscopy, and cell fractionation. Includes practical skills in microscope work.

3

Cell Membranes and Enzymes

Fluid mosaic model, transport across membranes, enzyme kinetics, and factors affecting enzyme activity.

4

Cell Division and Biodiversity

Mitosis, meiosis, classification, and the importance of biodiversity. Links to evolution and natural selection.

5
